How Could I Forget Don Gato!!

Don Gato went home on Saturday, June 18, joining several kids (age 2, 3 and 7), mom and dad and Josephine the cat who was adopted from us at PetSmart in 2013.  Lots going on in that house!
Handsome Don Gato!
The woman adopting Kiwi came to the Shelter over the weekend and was introduced to some of our senior cats.  She will take Kiwi once she and her son have chosen another cat.

Sadly by Saturday one of the kittens brought to PetSmart was sneezing and had a weepy eye.  We brought them all back to the Shelter before they all became sick.  Crystal is scrubbing down the big cage today.  Another blog update will go out when we decide who is going next.

Thank you to the many volunteers who stepped up to fill the dates listed on the last blog.  Below are the dates that still need to be covered.  Every other Saturday starting July 9 needs to be filled so if you are interested in a regular spot on a weekend let me know.

Below are the dates that still need coverage:

Good Things Continue!!

Kiwi has a home!! Yay!!  She is being adopted by a woman who works for the County that staff at the Shelter deal with often. Her name is Lisa and she read Kiwi's story and agrees she needs a break!  In addition to Kiwi, Lisa will be adopting a senior cat.  She was introduced to Daisy but apparently that did not turn out very well.  (As some of you know, Daisy has been a tad temperamental lately.)  Lisa will be meeting some senior cats at the Shelter over the weekend.

Maria is adopted and going home tomorrow.  She is gaining a feline, canine, and human sibling - one of each!!

Three kittens arrived that will be occupying the big cage.  They are from a litter of five that was reportedly living outside.  Well, once you meet them you will see that more than likely someone had an unspayed female that had a litter and they kept them until they got big then dumped them outside and claimed they were strays.  All five are domestic and showed no signs of living outside when they arrived.   These three are fabulous!!  They will do fine in a home with cats, kids and dogs.

Latest Adoptions: Tux and Savannah

Tux and Savannah did not stay at the store very long!  Both left last Wednesday.  Tux will be living with a Husky, a ten year old cat named Captain and two humans!  His new mom is very excited about having him.  Savannah will be living with an older cat, two young adults and mom.  She is going to be well cared for, loved and happy!!

Daisy and Kiwi moved into PetSmart over the weekend.  These two are both very special cases!  Daisy is fourteen years old and is a beauty!  Can you believe her owner moved and brought her to the Shelter after fourteen years?!  It was the only home Daisy ever knew. We have had her since November of last year.  She did come in with another cat - Cole, an eight year male.  He is not a good prospect for PetSmart though. Pretty Daisy loves kids and loves attention!  She will do well in a home with other cats and even a dog.
Darling Daisy

Kiwi has had a tough time and looks like it!  She came in on June 3 of 2015 with a severely injured tail and terrible looking eyes.  Two vets told us that she has a very mild case of entropian and both agreed surgery is not advised.  When she came in it was apparent she had recently delivered a kitten.  Animal Control attempted to find her baby however could not.  We had a single very young kitten named Strawberry and gave it to Kiwi.  She took to it immediately and was a wonderful, loving mom to her foster baby!  Best mom ever! She was so depressed when Strawberry was adopted. This poor girl needs a break!!  Between her tail, eyes and a weight problem she is not the most attractive cat but, boy, she is a sweetheart!!
Sweet Kiwi
The June calendar is complete with the exception of the Adoption Table on Sundays - June 18 and 25.  If you are available please let me know.  If you have never done the adoption table and would like to learn I will gladly arrange training for you!!  Also, it never hurts to look ahead to the July schedule!!

Kitten season is in full swing.  We have been inundated at the Shelter.  If you are interested in fostering please let me know.  We provide everything - litter, food, meds, support - you provide the love and the home!  Once they are ready for adoption we take them back.

Just a reminder - adoption fee for cats through June is only $10!  Such a deal!!

Happy tails, Elsa!! You deserve it!

Elsa is going home tomorrow - Saturday.  She has had such a rough time of it so we are very happy for her!  She will be the only pet in the house with four kids under age seven and Mom and Dad.  Think of all the love and attention she will now receive!  Yay!

Two lovely ladies arrived at the store today...Goldie and Luscious.

Goldie is a pretty cailco that will acclimate to any household.  She is under the age of two.  You may wonder why she has an ear tip.  Well, a very nice gentleman asked for help recovering her when she was being spayed.  He was moving but had been feeding cats in his area.  He told us he was going to continue going back and forth and feeding her and would then try to bring her to his new home.  Well, she is just entirely too nice and friendly for that!!  We asked to keep her and put her up for adoption and he readily agreed.
Goldie

Luscious is a sweet blue cream torti who was abandoned when her family moved.  How tired are we all of this type of story?  Why are cats such throw away pets?  Luscious was actually adopted from us in July of 2012.  Her family moved from Wildwood to Florida in May and they simply put Luscious outside and left her behind.  We have been told they had a black cat as well.  Sadly we have not received that cat at the Shelter.  She was flea infested when she came so you will notice hair loss in her back end.  It will grow in and she will be beautiful!!
Luscious

Sadly we must say good bye to Rikki while she takes care of some personal stuff.  Rikki has been a huge asset for quite a while doing every Wednesday and Thursday morning.  Yesterday was her last day but she may be back.  (Rikki, feel free to jump in at any time!!) So, I am looking for people to take permanent spots that cover Wednesdays and Thursdays.  If you know anyone interested in joining our group let me know - even if just for the summer.

Coverage is needed for the below dates for the remainder of the month of May:
Wednesday, May 25, AM Cleaning
Thursday, May 26, AM Cleaning

The Diva and the Kittens Go Home!

Good week!!  Godiva is going home with a young couple tomorrow and will be the only cat - of course!  The young man who is taking her home had a recent relationship breakup and misses the cat he lived with.  He fell in love with GoDIVA!  The volunteers working at PetSmart the night he met Godiva all agree this is a perfect fit! She will be happy having all the human attention!

Geneviere and Gabriela are going home together to join.  They are gaining a mom and dad, two human sisters - ages 13 and 8 - and a canine  brother.  We did caution the new family on the importance of a slow introduction between the kittens and the dog and the household in general.

Four cats were brought to the store today.

Annabelle is a blue cream calico just under a year old.  She came in as stray last month.  She may appear at first to be shy however she is friendly and she is fine with other cats.
Annabelle

Bessie is a calico that was trapped by a Good Samaritan who is helping with a TNR colony.  This pretty girl was living in a wooded area scrounging for food!  She needs to be an inside pet!! She is about five years old and was spayed at intake so someone obviously cared about her at one time.
Bessie
Elton is a nice cat who has a story we have heard all too often.  His owner passed away and no family member is able to take him.  He is about eight years old so qualifies for our Senior For Senior Adoption Program.  He will sit on your lap however we were told he is NOT fond of belly rubs!!
Elton
Elsa has had a rough time.  She was living in a house with other cats and they were not nice to her!!  So, a very kind woman who has a shed/outbuilding for difficult to adopt cats said she would take Elsa.  Well, every time she went into the shed Elsa was there asking for attention!!  Seeing that she was a friendly adoptable cat she asked if she could bring Elsa to us for adoption.  Here she is!!  She is about three years old.
Elsa
As always...let the new guys settle in at their own pace.  They will let you know when they are ready to socialize!!

The May calendar is good!  Please look to June and see if you are available to do any of the available dates.

Welcome Angela and Julia!!  This mother/daughter team was trained Wednesday night and will be doing the evening cleanings on Fridays starting June 3.

Hola, Don Gato!!

A very wonderful male cat arrived at PetSmart today who we have dubbed "Don Gato!"  He is wonderful!!  He is friendly and handsome and is going to make someone very happy!  Don Gato is about nine years old and showed up one day at a TNR colony in Del Haven.  The colony caretaker immediately realized he was domestic, socialized and loved people so brought him to the Shelter.  He was already neutered so someone knows him.
"Keep purring my friends - meow!" Don Gato
Charlotte was brought back to the Shelter after we received a couple of reports that volunteers were having difficulty handling her - especially when it came time to return her to her cage.  She is doing fine and seems happy to be back at the Shelter.

Large Marge is apparently urinating outside of her box.  She was moved to two cages to facilitate cleaning since moving those large pieces in the big cage is difficult.  On Wednesday night she made it clear she did not want to move and took it upon herself to jump back into the big cage and join Geneviere and Gabrielle.  Marge did not have any issues with her box at the Shelter so perhaps it is the positioning of it at PetSmart.  Several volunteers have tried different things like changing litter, changing boxes and even changing cages.  If someone has a suggestion please let me know!  If you notice she is no longer doing it please let me know as well.

There will be some schedule changes in June.  Irene will be leaving us and Cathy Tc will be taking over the second and fourth Friday morning cleaning.  (Good luck, Irene!!  Thank you for everything you did for the PetSmart program for the last few years!) We are pleased to welcome mother/daughter team Angela and Julia who will assume the Friday afternoon cleaning!  Welcome to our group, A & J!!  Thank you for coming on board!!

The May calendar is just about complete.  The only openings are Sunday Adoption Table times.  I am waiting on a couple of volunteers to see if they are available. Below are the dates:
Sunday, May 8, Adoption Table 2-4pm
Sunday, May 22, Adoption Table 2-4pm
Sunday, May 29, Adoption Table 2-4pm

Kittens have started to arrive at the Shelter however at this time they are all too small to be available for adoption.  Many are still nursing or are in foster homes.  If someone comes into the store looking for kittens tell them they can call the Shelter and we will happily let them know what we do have and when we can expect litters back from fosters.  If anyone begins to talk about their cats ask if they are spayed or neutered and if they say no tell them to call the Shelter and we will gladly see what program we can plug them into or guide them in the right direction.  It is kitten season!!

Adoptions have slowed down but do not be discouraged!!  We always slow down this time of year.  I attribute it to proms, weddings and graduations.   People are busy.  No worries - it will pick up again!

A Couple More Of Our Cats Get Sprung!!

Happy Spring for Fred & Ethel and for Hannah!! Hannah left on Sunday and will be the only pet living with an older gentleman.  Her new dad had a cat for years and misses the feline companionship.  The Senior For Senior Adoption Program came through again!  Fred and Ethel left on Sunday as well.  They will be the only pets in their new home and will be gaining two human siblings - ages 11 and 9.  There is a lot of fun and attention in their future!

Arriving at PetSmart in time for the Wednesday adoption table is Buster, Persephone, and Fluffy.  Charlotte and Godiva are still at the store.

Buster is a friendly guy who will adapt to any home.  He lived with other cats prior to arriving at the Shelter.  We are familiar with Buster's previous owner and actually helped him to get Buster neutered about a year and half ago.  The owner was evicted and left Buster behind.
Buster
Fluffy is a five year old male that is yet another victim of an eviction.  He is very friendly and will sit on your lap.  He seems afraid of dogs however is fine with other cats.  He is a long hair and is going to need to be brushed a lot!  He will love the attention.  This picture does not do him justice...
Fluffy
Persephone is a two year old, very ladylike torbi.  She is very delicate and little with beautiful colors.  When you open the cage she looks at you for a second and then comes forward for a gentle pet or scratching of the ears.  She craves human attention and is very sweet!  She would do best in a quiet home as the only cat.  Although she would tolerate other animals it would be best if she was one-on-one.
Persephone
Did I forget someone  for this Thursday, March 24?  The schedule still shows it as available.  Let me know if you can cover or if you already told me and I neglected to add it to the schedule.

The April schedule looks great!  Deb and Warren are back on Sunday morning duty starting April 10. (Welcome back, guys!)  Rikki, I assume you are back and good for Wednesdays and Thursdays.  Please let me know if you need coverage.  Judy M, Larissa and Anna, please let me know your availability for weekend adoption table days.  I do know I need coverage for the below dates:
Thursday, April 7, PM Cleaning
Thursday, April 21, PM Cleaning
Friday, April 29, AM Cleaning

Kitten season has begun.  We did get our first litter last week.  Please - if you know anyone that needs help with spay/neuter for cats have them call the Shelter at 465-8923 or call the Animal Alliance of Cape May County at 465-NEUT.  There are low cost clinics every Thursday next door to the Shelter.  Depending on the circumstances we can also provide no cost.

Jessie James Goes Home!

Jessie James was picked up Wednesday night.  The first applicant never followed through with required information.  Thankfully we received a second application on Monday.  JJ is now living with an Akita, another cat, mom and dad and two teenagers.  He will have lots to do!

Hannah and Godiva were brought to the store today. Both qualify for our Senior For Senior Adoption Program.

Hannah is a pretty torti about eight years old.  She came into the Shelter in July of last year as a stray.  She was spayed at that time so someone knows her!  Hannah could acclimate to a home with other cats.  She does needs a nice quiet home so older kids are best.

Godiva is a nicer older girl - she is about 10.  She also came in spayed and as a stray.  A local animal advocate helping someone TNR discovered her and brought her to us in December.  She will do fine in a home with other cats.  Poor Godiva was suffering from entropian when she came in. She had surgery in January to alleviate her symptoms . For those who are not familiar with this, entropion is a condition in which the eyelid or lids fold inward. It is very uncomfortable, as the eyelashes constantly rub against the cornea causing irritation. Her eyes may appear sore,  however she is just fine and feels and looks a lot better than she did!
Hannah
Godiva
Hannah and Godiva are on the bottom row - each with two cages.  Keep the door closed between their living quarters.  Charlotte has two cages on the top row and the remaining two are ready for new arrivals.  Fred and Ethel are in the big cage.

The calendar for this month is shaping up!  Special thanks to Toni K for jumping in to cover Rikki!  Below are the remaining dates that need coverage:

Sunday, March 6, AM Cleaning
Thursday, March 10, PM Cleaning
Sunday, March 13, Adoption Table
Sunday, March 20, AM Cleaning
Thursday, March 24, PM Cleaning
Sunday, March 27, Adoption Table

Three More Adoptions!!

PetSmart adoptions continue to do well! I am so happy to tell you that five cats left this week! Silky left on Sunday with a nice young man and will be the only pet.  Bea left on Sunday and will be living with a seven year old labrador retriever, a four year old cat, two guinea pigs, mom and dad and three tweens.  There will be a lot going on in that house!  Maybe she'll lose some weight! :)

Three cats went home last night - all to separate homes.  Sweetie went home after spending the last 754 days at the Shelter!  Wow!  This is big! She will be the only pet living with a single man and will finally get the life she deserves! Suzy went home with a middle aged couple and will be the only pet in the house.  After two adoption applications falling through Binx went home!  Yep - third time is a charm!  He will be the only pet in the house with a middle aged couple and their daughter.  Their daughter volunteered with us years ago.  This is a great match!  We are so pleased with all of these homes!

Four cats arrived last night - Fred and Ethel, Charlotte and Jesse James.

Fred and Ethel have been at the Shelter since June of last year when they came in at the age of ten weeks.  They are about ten months old. They will adapt to just about any home out there. They have never lived in a house before and have been growing up in cage.  We really prefer that they go together.
Fred

Ethel
Charlotte is about two years old and loves kids!  She came to us in January of 2015 after following a little girl to the bust stop.  Charlotte likes to play with other cats BUT can get rough.  Please supervise her when she is out. She would do great as the only cat in the house however I will consider applications with other cats. She should also be in a home with older kids. In a nutshell - she is the boss!
Charlotte
Jesse James is a handsome boy about a year old that just came into the Shelter. He would adapt to any household!  He is a perfect gentleman and will make a wonderful pet Look at his picture - it says it all! We did get an application on him last night however it has yet to be completed and approved.  Continue to take applications.
Jesse James

There is room for more cats so expect additional guys in the near future!

The schedule has a lot of openings in March.  Rikki has a family obligation and will need to be out of town for a few weeks.  At this point she will return around Easter.  She does every Wednesday and Thursday morning so this creates quite a whole in the schedule! Three Quick Adoptions!

There was not even ample time to introduce these two cuties!  No sooner did they arrive at PetSmart and we received an application. Yes, they were adopted together!
Pumpkin
Latte
Taz has been adopted and will be brought to the Shelter tomorrow (Thursday) to be picked up Saturday morning.  The applicant volunteered for us in the past.  Taz will be gaining a caine and a feline sibling.

Phoebe was adopted by a young couple who are total animal people.  She will be joining two other cats and a dog.  They were drawn to Phoebe because of her left eye which looks just a bit cloudy.  They felt she needed some TLC and they are ready to provide it. We think the eye is an old injury.  She will have a nice, caring human family and plenty of animal companionship

Binx was brought to the store today.  He is playful and happy and ready for a household with other cats and kids and lots of fun!  He is young - just over six months old.
Binx
Two things are happening right now that you can share with the public, friends and family...one is the annual February Feline Frenzy and the other is an early Pit-ty Party.  Click on the below pictures for details and spread the word!

More Shuffling Around!

A lot of comings and goings to report!  We had to bring Camille back to the Shelter as she had a seizure over the weekend.  Once at the Shelter she did have another one. We are having bloodwork done and started her on anti convulsive meds.  Poor old girl!

Peter has been adopted along with a female cat from the Shelter.  Both will be picked up on Friday so to make things easier on the adopter we brought him back and he will head home from the Shelter along with his new sister, Triscuit!

We had an opportunity to transfer cats to a small no kill private shelter in Massachusetts and jumped on it!  The transfer was set up through the No More Homeless Pets Best Friends Network Program.  We seized the opportunity to establish a relationship with this organization as we will need them once kitten season hits.  The name of the organization is Second Chance Animal Shelter.  You can learn more about them here: http://www.secondchanceanimals.org/

Once this opportunity was presented a transport was set up with the help of the Best Friends Network which was actually three legs.  Our wonderful Kitty Garcia (aka Tuesday morning Kitty) drove seven cats up the Parkway and met someone from the Montclair Animal Shelter who took leg number two which is meeting someone from Second Chance in Connecticut, completing leg number three!  Wonderful!!

So, we pulled Tink and Bart and transferred them to Second Chance.  Below are the cats that arrived today:

Phoebe came into the Shelter in June of last year.  She was found on the side of the road by a Good Samaritan, brought home and placed in a carrier overnight pending a vet check the next day.  Well, overnight she gave birth to seven kittens in that carrier!  Seven black kittens!  She was a good mom and subsequently all her kittens were adopted. Phoebe is a quiet, very affectionate girl, about four years old.  She would be best as an only pet in a quiet home - however we will entertain applications with other animals and decide from there.
Phoebe
Suzie is a seven month old torti that came in as a stray in October.  She is sweet and is fine with other cats! She lived in a quiet foster home with other cats for a while.
Suzie
Taz came into the Shelter as a stray at six weeks old and is accustomed to people! He may seem shy at first however he is very sweet and will push his head into your hand for a petting session! He loves other cats.  He does have the runny eye that comes and goes so do not be concerned if you see it.
Taz
And last,  but far from least,  is Sweetie.  Would you look at that face???  Sweetie hit her second anniversary here at the Shelter on January 31.  Two years in a cage.   Police in North Wildwood received an anonymous call in January of 2014 that two cats were in a box at the Super Fresh parking lot at 25th Street and Delaware Avenue.  Sweetie was in that box with another cat we named Valentine - a male Siamese. Valentine was adopted.  We think Sweetie is about five years old now.  We allowed Sweetie to walk around the main cat room to stay active and stretch her legs and she loved it!  She was a tad afraid and hissy at first so may revert just a little with this change in environment.  Read her reactions and let her set the pace.
Sweetie
February schedule is good!!  The only remaining openings are the Adoption Table on Sundays, February 21 and 28.  (Meanwhile our Leona who we miss DEARLY is doing well and will be back when she is all better!!)

The first adoption event of 2016 is February 12 - 14.  We will have dogs at the store all three days and additional cats if we can.

There was an open box of Fresh Step Litter in the cage area and Peter had a box full of the clay.  Please refrain from using the clay litter.  We lobbied hard to get back to the pine to avoid the dust and mess of the clay.  If a cat does not care for the pine litter initially give it a while.  We certainly do not want to go back that clay mess!!

We Survived Winter Storm Jonas!

I hope everyone fared well through that horrific winter storm!  PetSmart took care of our cats throughout the weekend so our volunteers could stay safe and sound at home. We knew there was only going to be three cats at the store over the weekend so decided to keep it that way to make it easier for the PetSmart employees to take care of them in addition to the store animals.

Prior to the store we had brought Warren and Lynette back to the Shelter after getting several reports of fighting, signs of stress and overall discontent.  These cats were living with people we suspect did not treat them very well so sadly they are accustomed to thing getting worse when they are stressed - perhaps putting them in a defensive mode when uncomfortable. Just the move to the store from the Shelter is stressful; add the additional people, the "fishbowl" effect, dogs, kids knocking on the windows, etc.  and it can be too much.

Ginger was adopted and is doing well!!  I was a bit concerned as there is a lot going on in her new home - several young children including toddlers and a hyper Jack Russell terrier.  After speaking with the applicant about the importance of a slow introduction for Ginger to all of this I felt confident she would listen. She works from home so there is plenty of supervision.  She called to say that Ginger wanted out of the spare bathroom almost immediately!  She is doing well and she and the JRT are getting along fine.  She figured out quickly how to hide from the kids!!

Three cats arrived at the store yesterday.  Peter, Bea and Camille.  All three of these cats were altered when they came in which gives us hope that all the spay/neuter promotion being done in this County may actually be paying off!!

Bea has been at the Shelter the longest.  We estimate her to be about three or four years old. She arrived in August of 2014 after supposedly biting and scratching someone in an apartment complex.   She was called "stray" however was already spayed. She is quiet and does not go looking for attention but is very affectionate when she does get it!  The poor girl has been in a cage for two years and has gained a lot of weight.  She is not crazy about other cats but will tolerate them. The perfect fit for Bea is a quiet household.  This can include other cats, kids and dogs however the overall atmosphere needs to be mellow.  Please give her space to settle in and do not force her to interact with the other cats.
Bea
Camille is a wonderful, middle-aged beauty (just like most of us, right??!!).   She is affectionate and loves to be held!  We estimate her to be about seven years old.  She came into the Shelter in September of last year. She has an eye that can get a little wet and runny however it is not a reason for concern.  She is not sick and it is not contagious.  She would adapt well to a home with cats, kids and dogs.
Camille
And then there is Peter!!  He hugs!!  You are going to love him!  He is a sweetheart that came into the Shelter just last month.  He is about five years old.  He was left behind in a house following an eviction and we have been unable to contact his owner.
Peter
So there you have it!!  Three new cats ready for love and attention from you guys while they await their forever homes!

The February schedule looks great!  Please take a look and let me know if I have made any mistakes.  There has been a lot of changes lately.

Cindy cut the last roll of paper and brought it to the store.  I'll be purchasing more rolls to drop off for her to cut.

Harvey & Henry Go Home!

As we all knew Harvey and Henry did not last at PetSmart very long!  The applicant was very excited and would not have been able to pick them up until this weekend so we sent staff down to do the adoption.  They will be living with a younger couple and two older cats - ages 13 and 15.  The two older guys won't know what hit 'em!

Three cats arrived yesterday - Silky, Lynette and Warren.  All three are several years old.  Right now we only have two kittens at the Shelter.  Hopefully people continue to adopt even though the majority at the store will be older.

Lynette and Warren are four year old litter mates. You will know Warren by the white tip on his tail. These two were brought to the Shelter in September through Animal Control however were actually owner surrenders. The owners stated they could not care for them any longer.  It was the best thing that could have happened to these two!  They were flea and lice infested and had sores on them which could never be explained. They would be fine in a home with other cats.  They have not lived with dogs so we do not know how that would go. Warren seems to have a complete aversion to the smell of cigarette smoke on a human.  If you are a smoker (please quit!!) be cognizant of this should you attempt to pick him up.
Warren (L) and Lynette (R)
Silky is a pretty, older girl - about six years old. She was found wandering about a motel on North Wildwood Boulevard.  She does have an eartip and was spayed prior to arriving at the Shelter. She is a lovebug when it comes to humans but a diva when it comes to cats!  She would be okay in a home with dogs but not other cats.
Silky
The January schedule is complete.  Special thanks to all those who have helped to fill in the time slots!!  I did find a Friday regular in Cathy Tchorni!  Thanks, Cathy!

2016 Will Be OUR Year!!

Hobbit spent New Year's Eve in his new home!!  A couple came to the store last Wednesday night and met him and HAD to have him!!  The application was approved on Thursday. Rather than have Hobbit spend another holiday in a cage we arranged for staff to meet the applicant at the store and off he went!!

Two wonderful long haired boys arrived at the store last week - Harvey and Henry.  They are really handsome!!  They are all boy and all kitten...they love to play and they play rough!  We would LOVE to see them go home together.  Harvey is the orange guy and Henry is the gray, black tiger.  They are about eight months old and you will all love them!
Harvey & Henry
We received a few reports that Bart was experiencing some gastrointestinal problems - however as of today he seems fine!  Too many treats, maybe, or stress.

I am aware that there are donations at the store and will arrange to have them picked up.

There are quite a few openings in the schedule so please let me know if you can can cover any of the dates.  We need a regular for every Friday evening cleaning now.  Anything you can do would be a big help.  Below are the dates:

Friday, January 8, PM Cleaning
Sunday, January 10, AM Cleaning
Friday, January 15, PM Cleaning
Friday, January 22, PM Cleaning
Friday, January 29, PM Cleaning
Friday, January 29, AM Cleaning
Sunday, January 31, Adoption Table

Thank you all for your help and your commitment to this program throughout 2015!!  We had a great year!!  Let's hope it continues through 2016!!

It's a good Christmas for our cats at PetSmart!!  Kira has been adopted and left from the Shelter today.  She is going to gain two canine siblings - Basset Hounds!!  She will be the only cat in the house.  Lawrence is finally going home and is being picked up Wednesday night. He will be joining six other cats in a wonderful cat friendly home!! (Feast or famine!! He had another application that has been approved.  That applicant will be coming to the Shelter to meet other cats.)

Many of you have not met King yet so say hi and goodbye!!  He is a young orange male and is a love!  We knew he would not last long!  This little face below says it all!  King is a Christmas present for the family.  Dad is surprising mom and their two children, ages 4 and 8!  He will be the only pet. How fun is that?!!  He is being picked up Christmas Eve.
King

Ginger was brought down along with King.  She is three years old and is so sweet.  She and her kittens were dumped at a TNR location in Avalon.  She is a domestic cat that someone simply discarded.  Jerk!!  She is very friendly and will do fine in a home with other cats, dogs and children.

Bart is going to PetSmart tomorrow (Wednesday).  He is about six years and is a nice friendly young man!!  He was left behind with another cat when his owner vacated a rental property.  The other cat ran from animal control and has yet to be found.  Bart did live with a dog, too.  The jerk who abandoned Bart took the dog with him.Bart is a perfect companion cat!!

Our friend Leona is doing well, however she will not be able to volunteer for quite a while.  Judy Mc - not to be confused with Judy M - came to the Shelter today and learned the paperwork that is completed during the adoption application process and the paperwork completed when a cat goes home.  She and Larissa are going to help us get through while we wait for Leona to come back.

The December schedule is complete!  Paws crossed that no one cancels!!  Please look ahead to January.  There are  openings every other Sunday morning, every other Thursday night, every other Friday night, and a couple of random Friday mornings. Please let me know if you can cover any of the open dates.

Let's play catch up!!  We did have a good application on Hobbit however the family pulled the application.  They did go to the Cumberland County SPCA and adopt though.  Three cats even!!  I have received another application for Hobbit however it is not complete and we have not heard from the applicant since December 9.

Bailey left on Saturday.  He will be joining a nice family!  There is mom and dad, and two older teenagers, two cats and a lab mix.  Definitely an animal friendly household!!  They have adopted from us in the past also.

I am introducing Carolyn even though most of you have met her already AND she has an approved application.  She is a fabulous cat just over a year old.  One day she appeared in someone's yard and was quite hungry.  She had already been spayed so someone owned her and took care of her at one time.  She will be joining a young man and his two year old child. She will be happy and loved there - hopefully for good this time!
Carolyn
Big Tink was brought down to PetSmart on Friday. She was originally adopted from us as a kitten in 2009.  She was brought back to us November of 2013 and has been with us ever since.  She has been in a cage for over 750 days.  In her home she lived with a little girl as the only pet and was quite happy.  She was not exposed to other cats or dogs in that home.  At the Shelter she was NOT fond of other cats.    Do not force her to interact with the other cats and let her take her time acclimating to PetSmart.
Kira

I am having some issues with the Yahoo calendar on line and will let you know as soon as it is updated for 2016.  If you need to change your regular volunteer time slot please let me know as I will be doing the entire year and updating as I receive cancellations.

As you are aware Leona will be needing to take some time to heal.  Her regular volunteer time slots are every other Thursday evening cleaning and every weekend on the Adoption Table.  She and Judy M let me know toward the end of the month what days they are available for the upcoming month and split up the Saturdays and Sunday.  Virginia is covering this Thursday evening, December 17 and Larissa is covering the Adoption Table on Sunday, December 27.  Coverage is needed for the Adoption Table on Saturday, December 19.  Leona does 1-3pm during winter months however I can change that to 2-4pm if you prefer.  In addition coverage is needed for Thursday, December 31, in the evening.

If you are interested in learning the logistics of the adoption table and are available to help weekends in January and February please let me know.  We can set up training at the Shelter or at PetSmart.

Coverage is still needed for every other Sunday starting December 27.  Joelle begins the alternating weeks on December 20.

And Adoptions Continue!!

Jolly left from the Shelter yesterday. He was picked up by staff.  He will be joining a young Coast Guard couple and their seven month old female cat, Callie.  He will have a nice life with them!  We had met the couple prior to this adoption.  A friend had found kittens and they adopted Callie from her.  When the friend initially found the kittens she brought them to the Shelter and we asked her to foster them and she agreed to do so. She was told should she be able to find suitable homes we would help make sure the kittens received all their vet work and were spayed and neutered.  This couple adopted one of her kittens and contacted us.  A few weeks later they met Jolly at PetSmart and decided he needed to be Callie's friend!

Trevor left Wednesday night.  As the featured picture to the right indicates he is joining a kid friendly, dog friendly, cat friendly, animal loving household! The cat the family already owns was adopted from us years ago as an adult. (I worked with the dad of this family at the Stone Harbor PD and was pleased to see the application! Great family!)

Tink arrived at PetSmart while I was away.  Although many of you already know her I will introduce her now. She is about a year old and came into the Shelter in June with four kittens. She was a good mommy!  She was very protective of her litter. Once her kittens were ready to go she went up for adoption. She will be fine in a home with other cats and kids, however with dogs she will need a slow introduction.
Tink
Bailey and Toffee arrived at PetSmart yesterday. Both are female. They are nice kittens !!  They are littermates that arrived at the Shelter in August at four weeks old.  They went into a foster home where they spent time with other cats, kids and dogs. It is one of our most experienced fosters.  They are purring machines!!  Pick them up together and hear the roar!! Our goal is to see them be adopted into the same home.
Toffee
Bailey
Tawney has had a few issues while at PetSmart.  Yesterday when staff arrived to drop off Toffee and Bailey there was several small piles of vomit in her cage.  Poor old Tawney just seems to be stressed out there so we brought her back.  She seems happier here!!

Schedule is good through the rest of this month...paws crossed it stays that way!!

New Arrivals, Pending Adoption, Return of Groucho

Trevor has an approved adoption application and hopefully will be going home this weekend.  He will be the only pet in the house,  however the family has had cats in the past as well as a dog.  The primary caretaker will be a young man living with his mom.

Groucho was having some medical issues so we brought him back to the Shelter.  He was vomiting a lot and looked like he did not feel well. PetSmart management was concerned so we thought it best to get him.  Also he urinates standing up and apparently has been missing the box often.

Introducing the new guys:

Hobbit is a young male cat that came into the Shelter in early September along with the rest of his litter.  He is a sweet little guy that will do well in any household.  He and his littermates were living in a shed after their owner passed away.  He should do well in any household.
Hobbit

Fluff is a couple of years old and has been bounced around a bit.  In the summer of 2014 he was found hanging around a local motel and was obviously friendly.  We helped the person who found him and Fluff altered and vaccinated.  We were told he would be kept as a pet.   In August of this year Fluff was brought to the Shelter because the owner could no longer care for him after having him for a few months.  we recognized him as the cat we had helped to get fixed last year.  The person who had originally had Fluff was notified but he said could not take him back.

When Fluff first came in he so obviously was suffering from neglect.  He had terrible scratches and loss of hair probably due to lack of flea control and poor food.  Now he looks wonderful! He is very friendly and a good boy!  He is three years old.  In the last home he lived with other cats and with kids.  We do not know how he would do in a home with dogs.
Fluff
Mars is a fun loving playful little boy!!  He and his litter mates were allegedly found running out of the woods by a passerby in her car.  All three in the litter are friendly and totally socialized! We suspect that perhaps they were living in a home and not actually found in the woods.  This little imp will make a wonderful pet and will acclimate to any household.  Look at that little face!
Mars
The schedule for this month is complete with the exception of Friday, November 27, AM cleaning.  Please let me know if you are available.  As far as Thanksgiving...PetSmart store employees will take care of our cats when they go in to take care of their animals.  We get a day off!! (Thank you, Deb and Warren,  for offering to cover that day!)

Below are two annual events/promotions that we do at the Shelter which most of your are quite familiar with....Black Friday and Santa Claws!  Click on the below pictures for information on both.  We will post flyers at PetSmart as well.  Please feel free to save the pictures and share as an email attachment or Facebook post.
